Wallet checks and balances

Confirm a number is an active wallet and see whose it is before money moves, and read your own account balances.

Check a wallet

GET /accounts/{provider}/{phone} asks MTN whether a number is an active MoMo wallet and, if it is, the owner’s name:

Use it to:

• Confirm a payout recipient. Show the name and ask “Send E250 to Sipho Dlamini?” before you pay. Add ?account=disbursement so the check runs through the account the payout will use.
• Validate a number at sign-up, before you ever charge it.

Only the name is returned. MTN’s other account holder details are never exposed. A check says the wallet is active; it doesn’t promise a specific amount can be received.

Read your balances

GET /balances returns the available balance of your collection account and, when connected, your disbursement account:

Balances are cached for 30 seconds. Check the disbursement balance before a large batch of payouts. The dashboard shows both on the overview and Payouts pages.
